2013 MA Joint Practice

To celebrate the new long count and making it to 2013 we held a MA joint practice. We had a good turn out with representatives from around the state (BKK, Doshikai, Shodokan, and Sei Zan Kai). Practice seemed quick but we were there for 3.5 hours.

After a quick warm up and some suburi we had kihon practice. Followed by a friendly shiai with seven person teams. Practice ended with us all having keiko with the Sensei's.

Thanks to all the Sensei's: Yoshida, Suyama, Harrison, Poitras, Sekiguchi, and Konno that made the trip out to Randolph. Special thanks for Suyama Sensei for coming all the way.

Last Practice of 2012

On Sunday 30th December 2012 we held our final practice of the year. Thanks everyone who attended and made the keiko a success.

After some kihon and waza drills we had a practice shiai. We split everyone into two teams, A and B. A lot of close and fun matches followed. Team B pulled ahead and won the honor of playing the two person Sensei Team of Ogimura playing Nito no kamae and Izumi playing Jodan no kamae. As usual we were no match for the Sensei's!

Afterward we headed over to Rick's in Randolph for second practice! See everyone next year and thanks again.

13th Goyokai Kendo Tournament/１３回五葉会剣道大会

The 13th Goyokai Tournament (Shufukai's 15th Anniversary) was held on October 28, 2012.
A joint practice and welcome dinner was held on the 27th with 80 participants.  We drank until 11:30 p.m. at the party and of course, continued to drink at the hotel until 3:30 a.m.............

The tournament was very successful with 130 participants.
The result was great for the Shufukai as we won the team division, got 1-3rd place in 4 dan and above division, 3rd place in Shodan and 1st place in Women's kyu division.

第１３回五葉会剣道大会（秀風会１５周年記念大会）が１０月２８日に行われました。
前日の２７日には，合同稽古、ウェルカムパーティーが行われ，８０名の参加者で楽しい夜を過ごしました。
（最後はホテルの一室まで飲み会が続き，終了したのは明け方３時半でした。。。。。。。。。）

大会は１３０名が参加し大成功に終わりました。
また，秀風会にとっては、団体戦優勝、個人戦では、４段以上の部、１−３位を独占、初段の部３位、女子級の部優勝と，すばらしい成績を残すことが出来ました。

17th Goyokai Kendo Seminar／第１７回五葉会剣道合宿

The seminar was held from September 28 through September 30, 2012 at NY Shinbukan Dojo.

This year we had Hironori Tahara-sensei (Hanshi 8 dan) and Akihito Nakamura-sensei (Kyoshi 8 dan) as guest senseis.

We learned a lot from both senseis and had a lot of fun.

今年も剣道合宿が９月２８日から３０日の日程で，ニューヨーク神武館の道場にて行われました。

今年は田原弘徳先生，範士８段、中村明人先生，教士８段のお二人を講師としてお招き致しました。

３日間で沢山のことを学び，またとても楽しく稽古をする事が出来ました。

The Joint Practice will start from 5:45 p.m. and the dinner will start from 7:45 p.m. at Shufukai dojo.

The AEUSKF Kendo Tournament was held on August 19, 2012 in NY.
8 members from Shufukai participated in this tournament.
The following is the result of the tournament for the Shufukai.

The 17th Goyokai Kendo Seminar/１７回五葉会剣道合宿

The 17th Goyokai Kendo Seminar/Camp will be held on September 28, 29 and 30, 1012.
This year we invite Hironori Tahara-sensei (Hanshi 8 dan) and Akihito Nakamura-sensei (Kyoshi 8 dan) from Tokyo Metropolitan Police.
The seminar will be held in Scarsdale, New York.

１７回五葉会剣道合宿が９月２８、２９、３０日の日程で行われます。

University of Waterloo Kendo Club 25th Anniversary Tournament/ウォタール大学剣道部２５周年記念大会

The University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada) hosted their 25^th Anniversary Kendo Tournament on July 14, 2012.  One of our members (Tim) graduated from this college and he is one of alumni of this Kendo Club.  Therefore, Tim and four of our members (Phillip, Craig, Andy and Ogi) went to participate in this tournament to celebrate their 25^th anniversary.  There are many alumni who are former/current member of Canadian National Team.  There were more than 150 participants who competed in the Mudan/Shodan division, 2.3-dan division, Women’s division, 4-dan and up division and Team division.  Please see the whole results of the tournament from here.   From Shufukai, Toshihiro Ogimura won the first place in 4-dan and up division. 

After the tournament, there was a party to celebrate their 25^th anniversary further.

We were drinking until 2 a.m. at the restaurant and then 5 a.m. at the hotel room.  We had a great time to interact with many Canadian kendo people, senseis and friends.

Congratulations to UW Kendo Club and Ariga-sensei who is a founder of the kendo club for the 25^th Anniversary!!

ウォータルー大学剣道部の２５周年記念大会が７月１４日に行われました。秀風会メンバーのティムはこの大学を卒業し，剣道部のOBでもあります。その関係もあり，ティムと他の４人のメンバーでお祝いがてらこの大会に参加して来ました。この大学剣道部の卒業生には多くの元、前、現カナダ代表チームのメンバーがいます。１５０人以上の参加者が，無段者／初段の部，２／３段の部，女子の部，４段以上の部、団体戦にて、熱戦を繰り広げました。大会の主な結果はこちらからご覧下さい。秀風会からは荻村寿浩が４段以上の部で優勝しました。

大会後は，更に２５周年を祝うためのパーティーがあり，そちらにも参加して来ました。午前２時まではレストランで，そしてホテルの部屋に帰り朝の５時まで，カナダの剣道家達、友人，先生方と交流を深めました。

改めまして，ウォタルー大学剣道部，そして創立者の有賀先生，２５周年本当におめでとうございます！

5 dojos’ joint practice/５道場による合同稽古

On June 30, we had a joint practice at NY Shinbukan.  Participated dojos are NY Shinbukan, NY Kenshinkai, Garden State Kendo Alliance, Boston Kendo Kyokai and Shufukai.  Also a few friends from NYC Kendo club joined us.

This practice was planed and held to simply have a fun with friend dojos.  The members of those dojos often visit each other and practice together, therefore, it was also to strengthen our friendship and also to improve our kendo together, but most importantly, to get together with friends who love kendo and want to enjoy practice!  Although we are visiting each other quite often, due to the distance (especially between NY and Boston), it is very rare to have an official joint practice and that majority of each dojo’s members participate in.

We had almost 50 participants.  We did basic practice, shiai-keiko and then ji-keiko from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

All participants seemed enjoyed practice.  All senseis seemed tired as they did ji-keiko for one hour by being motodachi and also doing mawari-keiko among each other at the end, but all of them were smiling and really enjoyed the practice.

Off course, the dinner party after that was fun with a lot of KANPAI!

Thank you very much for Suyama-sensei and NY Shinbukan to host this event and let us use the dojo.

６月３０日に、５つの道場による合同稽古が行われた。参加道場はニューヨーク神武館、ニューヨーク剣心会、ガーデンステート剣道、ボストン剣道協会、そして秀風会。この稽古は単純に普段から仲の良い道場で集まって楽しもう！ということで計画され、実行されました。それぞれの道場のメンバーはよくお互い出稽古に行くので、この稽古を通じて、より友情を深め、稽古に励むこと、そして何よりも、剣道好きな仲間と集まって楽しく稽古をしましょう！というコンセプトです。よく道場館での行き来はありますが、いかんせん、お互いの道場同士、場所が遠いため（特にニューヨーク、ボストン間）今回のように、それぞれの道場の主立ったメンバーが集まった正式な合同稽古はなかなか出来ません。

約５０名の参加者で２時半から６時半までみっちりと基本稽古、試合稽古、そして地稽古が行われました。参加者の皆さんとても楽しそうに稽古されていました。それぞれの道場の先生方は１時間の地稽古で（最初は元立ち、最後は先生同士での回り稽古）とてもお疲れのようでしたが、稽古後は皆さん笑顔でとても楽しそうにされていました。

もちろん、稽古後の第二道場がたくさんの乾杯で盛り上がったことは言うまでもありません。

この場をお借りして、今回このイベントのために道場を提供してくださった陶山先生、ニューヨーク神武館の皆様に御礼を申し上げます。

Farewell practice for Teiji and Mika/ていじ君、美香さんの追い出し稽古

It was sad that we had to have another farewell keiko.  Teiji and Mika who has been a member for 3 years  are moving to L.A.  Therefore we had a farewell keiko for them on June 3, 2012.  Teiji who is 10 years old boy, practiced with everybody and did renzoku-kakarikeiko (13 motodachi).  (after our 3 hours long regular practice)  He became sick during keiko, but never gave up and completed all kakarikeiko with more spirit than usual. I think he grew up greatly with in today's keiko.  His kiai at the end of kakarikeiko was so good and strong.  We wish he continues to grow up and practice kendo and becomes a member of USA notional team for the future.  We are looking forward to practicing with you again soon.  Good-Luck!
Mika-san, who has not been practicing almost 1 year, returned just for today!  She participated in all regular kieko and did keiko with everybody.  She then did kakari-keiko to 4 members.  She seemed so tired and her arms seemed so heavy, but like her son, she never gave up and completed all of them.  She had been a great member, but also a great support for her son and also Shufukai.  We wish she can re-start practicing kendo in L.A. and come visit us to practice with us again.

哀しいことに、またもや追い出し稽古をしました。３年間にわたり、秀風会メンバーとして活躍してくれたていじ君と美香さんがロスアンゼルスに引っ越すこととなり、彼らの追い出し稽古を６月３日に行いました。１０歳のていじ君ですが、３時間の普段の稽古ないようすべてを終えたあと、参加者全員との稽古、そして全員との連続懸かり稽古を見事にやり遂げました。稽古中に少し具合が悪くなってしまう瞬間がありましたが、最後の掛かり稽古は決してあきらめず、普段よりも強い意志を見せてくれました。最後の一人の時の気合いは素晴らしいものがあり、今日一日の稽古で、大きく成長したのでは、と思わせてくれるほどでした。このまま頑張って稽古に励み、将来はアメリカの代表選手になってほしいと思います。また一緒に稽古が出来る日を楽しみにしています。頑張ってください。
美香さんは、この一年間全く稽古をしていなかったにもかかわらず、今日のために復帰して最後の稽古に参加してくださいました。１年ぶり（もしくはそれ以上ぶりか？）なのに、すべての稽古に参加し、全員との稽古も息子さん負けじと最後までやり抜きました。掛かり稽古も４人に対し連続で懸かり、疲れが見え、腕が重そうに見えましたが、あきらめず最後まで全力懸かっていました。美香さんはメンバーとして息子さんだけではなく、秀風会全体をいつもサポートしてくださっていました。ロスの新しい環境で剣道を再会し、また剣を交える日が来ることを祈っております。本当にお疲れさまでした。そしてありがとうございました。

Farewell practice for Ayano/あやのさんの追い出し稽古

Ayano who came to USA as an exchanging students at a University in R.I. and had been commuting alomost 3 hours to join our practice every Sunday, was going back to Japan.  Therefore, we had a farewell keiko and party for her on May 13, 2012.  She practices hard as usual and then did keiko with all participants.  She then did renzoku-kakarikeiko as a farewell keiko.  She seemed tired, but when we greeted and took a picture at the end, she was recovered already.  Being young is great...............
We would like to thank her for her commitment as it was not easy to take a bus and train for 3 hours to come to the practice.  We all enjoyed practice and time spent together.  Good-Luck Ayano and hope to see you and practice with you again near future.

ロードアイランドに１年間留学、秀風会に毎週のように３時間近くかけて稽古に来てくださっていたあやのさんが、日本に帰ることになり、彼女の追い出し稽古、さよならパーティーが５月１３日に行われました。あやのさんはいつもと同じように一生懸命に稽古に参加し、最後に参加者全員と稽古。そしてさらに全員へ連続懸かり稽古をやり遂げ、無事に送り出されました。とても疲れているようでしたが、最後の挨拶、記念撮影が終わる頃にはもう元気になっていました。若いということは良いことですね。。。。。。。。
毎週バスと電車を乗り継いで、３時間かけて稽古に来てくださってました。簡単なことではないです。その努力とやる気にとても感謝しています。メンバー全員あやのさんとの稽古、それ以外の時間すべて楽しく過ごすことが出来ました。再会、そしてまた剣を交えることが出来る日を楽しみにしております。

The 2nd MA kendo Tournament/第２回マサチューセッツ州剣道大会

The 2^nd MA kendo Rensei Tournament

Following the AEUSKF shinpan seminar, we had the 2^nd MA kendo tournament.  So that all participants from the seminar could generalize and utilize what they learnt from the seminar in the real situation.  All participants’ did very well in both of the shiai and shinpan (3dan and above) and everybody seemed to have a great time.  In all divisions, we had a round robin first and then the tournament, so that all participants had at least 7 matches and more in both individuals and team matches.  At the end of the day, everybody seemed very tired, but somehow satisfied.

By the way, the 1^st MA kendo tournament was held in 1994 or 1995.  Since then, Kendo in New England area had been expanded and improved a lot.  Many people were waiting for this tournament to be held as many more people practice kendo than before in MA area.  Thank you very much for all senseis who have been leading kendo in MA in each dojo and creating a very strong friendship between each dojo in this area.   This tournament was the result of each senseis’ and everybody’s, who practice Kendo in MA, effort and commitment.  Therefore, we need to continue to have this tournament annually or twice a year from now on.

第２回マサチューセッツ州錬成剣道大会

午前中の審判講習会に引き続き、マサチューセッツ州の剣道大会を行った。参加者が午前中に学んだことを即実践に活かし、活用出来るようにとの意図から生まれたものである。参加者全員が試合、そして審判（３段以上のもの）でよく頑張り、とても有意義な時間を過ごせたように見受けられた。すべての部門で、個人団体戦を合わせると一人最低７試合以上こなし、その結果、最後には全員がとても疲れていたが、満足そうにしていた。結果は上記の通り。（英語版）すべての入賞者の皆様おめでとうございます。


また、今回はKendoStyleさんより、各優勝者に商品券を頂きました。ありがとうございました。

ところで、今大会は第２回と銘打って入るが、実は第一回は１９９４年か９５年に行われた。それ以来大会は行われなかったが、 第１回大会以来、マサチューセッツ州の剣道は剣道人口も増え、剣道のレベルも上がり、盛り上がってきていたため、 誰もが待ち望んでいた大会であった。このエリアの剣道を各道場でリードし、さらに各道場間での友好関係を築いてきてくださった先生方に感謝いたします。この大会はそうした先生方、そしてこのエリアで剣道修行を積むすべての人たちの努力の結果である。従って、今回で終わりではなく、これから毎年恒例、もしくは一年に２回の開催を目指してやっていかなければならない。

AEUSKF Shinpan seminar/ 審判講習会

AEUSKF shinpan seminar

The AEUSKF shinpan seminar was held in MA on May 20, 2012.  We had three instructors who participated in the IKF shinpan seminar in last January.  We would like as much participants as possible to attend this seminar, therefore, we also had a shiai seminar at the same time.  So, when people were practicing shinpan, there were people who had to do shiai in order for shinpan to practice shinpan.  We targeted those people to receive some kind of benefit to be there during shinpan seminar.   We had 4 guest senseis to be instructors for the shiai seminar.  They came all the way from Montreal and NY. 

We had approximately 50 participants plus 7 instructors.  From 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., all participants practiced both shiai and shinpan and received a lot of feed back from those instructors. 

全東部米国剣道連盟審判講習会

全東部米国剣道連盟の審判講習会がマサチューセッツ州で５月２０日に行われた。今回の講師は、１月に行われた国際剣道連盟主催の審判講習会に参加された先生方。審判講習会に出来るだけ多くの人たちに参加してもらえるように、試合セミナーを同時進行で行った。審判セミナーの中で、審判の練習をするには当然試合をしてくれる人たちが必要で、この試合をしている人たちにもなにか得るものはないかと考えた次第である。この試合セミナーには４人の先生方が遠くモントリオール、そしてニューヨークから合計４人来てくださった。講習会には約５０名の参加者、そして７人の講師陣が参加した。午前９時から１１時半までの間、すべての参加者が試合並びに審判の稽古をし、たくさんのアドバイスや指導を受けた。

5 dojos Joint Practice/５道場合同稽古

On June 30, 2012, we will have a joint practice at the NY Shinbu-kan.  Participant dojos are NY Shinbukan, NY Kenshinkai, Garden State Kendo Alliance, Boston Kendo Kyokai and Boston Shufukai Kendo.  This practice starts from 2:30 p.m. and finishes at 6:30 p.m.  We are planning to do basic practice, Shiai practice and Ji-keiko.  We also plan to have a dinner party after the practice.
This is a great opportunity to strengthen our friendship and practice Kendo together.  Most importantly, to have a fun!!

６月３０日にニューヨーク神武館に於いて、合同稽古を行う。参加道場はニューヨーク神武館、ニューヨーク剣心会、ガーデンステート剣道会、ボストン剣道協会、そしてボストン秀風会剣道の５道場。稽古は２時半より、６時半まで。基本稽古、試合稽古、地稽古を行う予定。もちろん稽古のあとはディナーの第二道場の予定。５道場のつながり、友情を強め、互いに切磋琢磨する良い機会です。もちろん、楽しく稽古するのが一番！

Garden State Kendo Tournament/ガーデンステート剣道大会

Garden State Kendo Alliance hosted their first Kendo Tournament on 4/28/12.  GSK is the one of best friend dojo for Shufukai.  7 of our members participated in the tournament.  There were almost 140 people participated.  Izumi-san got second place in 4rth dan and above division as his first tournament in the USA.  P. Han from GSK won his first tournament.  Congratulations!!  We arrived at the hotel in NJ on Friday, 4/27 around 10 p.m. and Henry Lee-sensei, Jae, and Sue from GSK joined us for a dinner and drink.  We drank until 2:30 a.m. while preparing the tournament and talked about Kendo. Congratulations to GSK for very successful tournament and Thank you for hosting a such a great tournament.

ガーデンステート剣道会が第一回ガーデンステート剣道大会を開催した。GSKは秀風会ととても仲の良い道場の一つでもある。そこで今回は秀風会から７名が参加した。大会には約１４０名もの参加者があり、４段以上の部では泉さんが準優勝した。アメリカに来られて初の大会で２位は素晴らしい。優勝者は主催道場のポールハン。両名とも、おめでとうございます。

我々は前日の午後１０時頃ニュージャージー州に入り、GSKのヘンリー先生、ジェイ、スーと合流し、食事、飲みにと、交流を深めた。もちろん大会の打ち合わせ、剣道談義に花を咲かせたことは言うまでもない。

Special keiko with Futagoishi-sensei/二子石先生との特別稽古会

We had a special keiko with Futagoishi-sensei on 2/16/12.  Futagoishi-sensei is Hanshi 8^th dan and All Japan 8^th dan tournament champion. (2006)  This was a part of the All US Kendo Federation’s Educational Tour.  Futagoishi-sensei went to New York, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Boston and Detroit.  Futagoishi-sensei taught us very basic manner, such as how to do seiza, how to sit down and stand up, etc. as those were not followed properly even in Japan, according to him.  He also went over some basic skills.  We had approximately 40 participants and most of us had a chance to practice with him during ji-keiko.  He was very strong (of course!), but very nice sensei.  We went out for a dinner after the practice.  Some of us also went to his room at his hotel and stayed very late to drink and talk about kendo a lot and had very fun night.  (until 4 a.m………..)

２月１６日に日本より二子石先生においでいただきました。全米剣道連盟の講習会ツアーの一環として行われた講習会には約４０名の参加がありました。二子石先生より、正座の仕方、立ち方等の基本的なマナーや所作が最近日本でもおろそかになっているとのことで、これらを再度確認しましょうということで細かくご指導いただいた。また、基本の素振り、基本打などを短い時間の中で、たくさんご指導いただいた。地稽古では参加者のほとんどが先生に懸かる機会を頂き、とても充実した講習会となった。二子石先生はお強いのは当たり前だが、とても優しく、気さくにご指導してくださり、参加者は皆、学ぶべきものの多い講習会となった。稽古後も食事、さらには先生のお部屋で第２、第３道場となり、夜遅くまで（朝早くまで？）お付き合いいただき、剣道談義のつきなかった。

Special Keiko with Futagoishi-sensei /二子石先生との特別稽古

The special practice with Futagoishi-sensei will be held at the Shufukai dojo on February 16, 2012. This is a part of All US Kendo Federation’s Educational Tour 2012. Futagoishi-sensei is Hanshi 8-dan and the 2006 All Japan 8-dan Kendo Tournament Champion. He is visiting NY, D.C., Atlanta, Boston and Detroit during this tour. Please join us for this special once in life opportunity. The practice will be held at Shufukai dojo from 6 15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. This is open for only AUSKF and AEUSKF members.

来る２月１６日に二子石先生をお迎えしての特別稽古会が行われます。この稽古会は、全米剣道連盟主催の教育ツアーと一部として行われます。二子石先生は範士８段、２００６年の全日本８段剣道大会の優勝者でもあります。今回二子石先生はニューヨーク、ワシントンD.C., アトランタ、ボストン、そしてデトロイトを回って下さいます。この一生に一度の特別な機会を逃すことなく、ぜひご参加ください。稽古は秀風会道場に置いて、午後６時１５分より７時４５分に行われます。なお、この稽古会は全米剣道連盟、並びに全東部米国剣道連盟のメンバーに向けてのものです。

The MA state joint practice/マサチューセッツ州合同稽古

The MA state’s joint practice was held on January 15, 2012 as a MA keiko-hajime (First practice in 2012.)

Members from Shufukai, Boston Kendo Kyokai, Seizankai, Doshikai and Shodokan participated in this event. We did kihon (basics), shiai practices, and ji-keiko from 2 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. All of 40 participants enjoyed the practice and had a great time. We also had a New Years’ party at the Rick’s café after the practice.

２０１２年１月１５日にマサチューセッツ州合同稽古会が稽古始めとして開かれました。秀風会、ボストン剣道協会、静山会、同志会、そして尚道館のメンバーが参加しました。基本稽古に始まり、試合稽古、そして地稽古を２時から５時４５分の間に行い、４０名の参加者は大いに稽古を楽しみ、充実した時間を過ごしました。また、稽古の後は新年会をリックズカフェで行いました。
